Why a valid diagnostic licence is not optional
A diagnostic tool is only ever as good as the software running behind it. Your ICON hardware is the interface, but the licence is what gives it the vehicle coverage, the security credentials and the current data to actually complete work on modern cars. When a licence lapses you do not simply stop receiving updates. On many gateway protected vehicles you also lose the authenticated access needed for adaptations, coding and actuator tests, which turns a routine job into a comeback. A live licence keeps you legal, keeps your coverage accurate and keeps the workshop earning.

What every Autocom licence tier includes
The foundation of every package is the Autocom CARS vehicle database, covering more than 45,000 specific vehicle systems on both older and newer passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. On top of that database, all three tiers include reading and erasing fault codes, System Scan, Real Time Data, VIN decoding, Adjustments, Activations, Service Light Reset and Reports, so the day to day diagnostic workflow is fully covered from the Standard tier upwards.
Crucially for a modern workshop, ADAS, DoIP and PassThru (SAE J2534) are included across every tier. That means you are equipped for camera and radar related work, for the newer diagnostic over internet protocol architectures appearing on current platforms, and for standardised pass through programming. RegLink is also included for Sweden and the UK, which makes number plate driven vehicle identification quick and accurate for a UK based shop.
Standard, Plus and Pro: choosing the right tier
Standard suits a workshop working mainly on established combustion vehicles that does not yet need electric vehicle coverage or guided fault finding. It delivers the full core diagnostic feature set on the complete database, with the Info System by HaynesPro available as an add-on.
Plus is the natural choice for a busy general workshop. It adds full electric and hybrid vehicle coverage, Guided Diagnostics for faster and more structured fault finding, and Secure Gateway access for the first manufacturer group. It also unlocks the Secure Gateway IVECO add-on alongside the Info System.
Pro is the complete professional package. On top of everything in Plus it adds Secure Gateway access for the second manufacturer group and the Flight Recorder function, which is invaluable for capturing intermittent and drive cycle related faults that will not present themselves on a static test. If you regularly work across a wide brand spread and chase the faults nobody else can pin down, Pro removes the gaps.
Secure Gateway access and modern vehicle security
Manufacturers now place a security gateway between the diagnostic port and the vehicle network, blocking write level access to anyone without authenticated credentials. Without the correct Secure Gateway entitlement you may still read a vehicle, but you will be locked out of the coding, adaptations and resets the job actually needs. The Plus tier covers the first brand group and the Pro tier covers both groups, so your licence choice should be led by the badges that regularly come through your door.
Secure Gateway group one covers Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Cupra, Fiat, Jeep, Lancia, Polestar, SEAT, Škoda, Volkswagen and Volvo. Secure Gateway group two covers Dacia, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes, Porsche and Renault. A dedicated Secure Gateway IVECO add-on is available on the Plus and Pro tiers for light commercial work.

💡 Mobile Eco Tuning Pro Tip:
On gateway protected vehicles, an expired licence does more than stop updates, it can lock you out of secured functions like adaptations and actuator tests part way through a job. Renew before your current period ends rather than after, and confirm your ICON has pulled the latest release before the car is on the ramp. When working on DoIP vehicles, use a stable wired connection for any secured write or flash, because a dropped wireless link mid session can leave a control module in a partially written state that is far harder to recover than the original fault.
